OpenAI told SpaceX on 28 August it will wind down the contract that feeds OpenAI models into Cursor. Proposed shutoff is 12 November 2026 the longest notice the change-of-control clause allows.
Future models, including the upcoming Astra, will not go to Cursor. OpenAI’s stated reason is not product quality. It says it cannot be confident SpaceX will stay inside OpenAI’s terms, citing past breaches after Musk took over Twitter/X and Musk’s sworn admission that xAI distilled OpenAI data.
SpaceX closed the roughly $60 billion all-stock purchase of Anysphere (Cursor) earlier this month. Cursor still offers Grok plus Anthropic and Google models.
This is a vendor-risk story dressed as a partnership breakup.
If your daily coding loop is Cursor + GPT, you have about eleven weeks of official first-party access, then a fork: stay in Cursor on non-OpenAI models, move the OpenAI work to Codex / ChatGPT, or keep a dual setup. Rules, skills and repo context do not copy cleanly across harnesses. The cost is switching time, not the subscription line.
OpenAI says it will support developers through the transition. That does not ship a migration button. Expect model names to disappear from the Cursor picker on a date you did not choose.
A solo who builds client sites or internal tools in Cursor should pick a fallback this week, not in November. Export custom rules and project notes now. Run one real ticket in Codex or Claude Code while Cursor still has GPT, and compare speed and review quality.
Agencies should write the model mix into the stack doc so a junior is not blocked on 13 November. Do not rip Cursor out on rumour. Do not assume GPT stays in the sidebar because it is there today.
