What actually happened
OpenAI turned ChatGPT for Word on by default on 1 October 2026 for Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces. The add-in itself has been available on every plan, including Free, since mid-September. Personal and free accounts still install it themselves from Microsoft Marketplace. Managed workspaces no longer start from off.
Two gates still sit in front of the ribbon. A workspace admin can turn Word access off in the ChatGPT admin console. A Microsoft 365 admin must also allow the ChatGPT add-in, the same one used for Excel and PowerPoint. If either side blocks it, staff will not see the sidebar.
The sidebar can draft, rewrite a selection, reorganize headings, and summarize the open document. It cannot read other files on the computer. Plugins are not supported. Connected apps such as Outlook, SharePoint, or Google Workspace depend on plan and permissions. Usage is token-priced at API rates for the model you pick, and it shares the plan allowance with Codex. Business, Enterprise, and Edu inputs are not used to train OpenAI models by default.
Why a small team cares
The file you already send is now the work surface, so the admin switch is the policy.
Take a six-person agency that writes proposals in Word and already pays for ChatGPT Business. Previously someone drafted in ChatGPT, copied into Word, and fixed the formatting in a second pass. Now the rewrite can happen on the selection, in the file the client receives. That removes a tab switch. It does not remove a review.
The cost trap is the shared pool. A long proposal on a frontier model burns the same allowance the team uses for Codex and other premium work. One person reformatting a 20-page scope can shrink everyone else's coding budget for the week. Memory also does not follow you in: instructions you saved in ChatGPT have to be pasted or saved as a skill the add-in can use.
Hype vs useful
The useful part is selection edits and first drafts from notes you paste in. The hype is "Word writes the proposal." OpenAI's own limits say complex formatting, tables, and charts need a manual pass, and the model can change facts you meant to keep. Save a copy before a large rewrite. If the Microsoft tenant blocks Marketplace installs, the 1 October default changes nothing until that admin allows the add-in.
