What actually happened

Shopify shipped Canvas on 1 October 2026. It is a design surface for the whole store, not another settings panel. Every page sits in one workspace you can pan and zoom. You click an element to edit it, or you tell Sidekick in chat. Changes land in real time, from one section up to a store-wide redesign. The preview is the live theme code, with interactions, animations, and different products, collections, and screen sizes.

To try it: Online Store, then Themes. Create a new theme in Canvas, or duplicate a Shopify theme or a custom theme into Canvas. The original stays in the current editor. It is rolling out to existing stores over the coming days. Shopify says Canvas is not replacing the classic editor yet.

At launch it does not support Theme Store themes, Markets, rollouts, translations, or app blocks and embeds. A theme edited in Canvas does not get theme updates.

Why a small team cares

Take a four-person home-goods brand on a Shopify theme, with one person who "does the site" and a freelancer on retainer for layout. Previously a collection-page redo meant a ticket, a quote, and a week. Now that person can duplicate the theme, ask Sidekick for the layout, and watch the code render with real products and breakpoints.

The Monday risk is treating that duplicate as the new live theme. If the store uses a review block, a size chart, or an email embed, those app blocks are unsupported at launch. If it sells into a second market or keeps Spanish and English in theme translations, those are unsupported too. Publishing also cuts the theme off from updates. A client who asks for "the new AI designer" this week still needs the live theme left where it is.

Hype vs useful

Shopify's pitch is that a non-designer can get a custom store in about twenty minutes, and that Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026. Treat both as marketing. The twenty-minute line is a product director comparing Canvas with a store he coded twelve years ago. The edit count is Sidekick's older theme work, not a quality score for Canvas.

The useful part is the limit list. Duplicate, trial one job, and do not make Canvas the production editor until app blocks, Markets, translations, and theme updates are back.
