Google’s Gemini Apps help page says model access on personal accounts changes in October 2026. For accounts with no AI subscription, the change starts on 9 October. Those accounts keep Flash-Lite, while Flash and Pro go. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash and loses Pro, but Google says those subscribers will get an email with their own date. AI Pro and AI Ultra keep Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.

Previously, an unpaid personal account could still reach Flash and a limited slice of Pro for drafts and research. After Friday, that picker becomes Flash-Lite only. A solo consultant who pastes a client brief into free Gemini on Thursday and again on Monday will not be using the same model.

If client work still lives in free Gemini, Friday is a quality cut, not a settings tweak.

What actually happened

The help page is about Gemini Apps on a personal account. It tells users without an AI subscription that changes start on 9 October. The useful part is the table after that date: no-plan accounts get Flash-Lite only, AI Plus gets Flash-Lite and Flash, and AI Pro and AI Ultra get all three. Google also says each available model can run at low, medium, or high effort, and higher effort uses more of the limit.

AI Plus is the easy one to misread. October 9 is the date Google attaches to unpaid accounts. Plus subscribers should wait for the email rather than the calendar. Secondary write-ups put Plus at $4.99 a month, but that price is not on the help page, so confirm it in your own billing screen before upgrading just to keep Flash.

Nothing on the page covers the Gemini API or Gemini inside Workspace. Do not treat a Workspace seat or an API key as affected on Friday because the consumer app is changing.

Why a small team cares

Take a solo who writes proposals and ad variants in the free Gemini app because the client will not pay for another seat. The job that worked on Flash or a short Pro run on Thursday becomes a Flash-Lite job on Monday. Short social lines may still be fine. A scope of work, a competitor read, or a landing-page argument is where the drop is more likely to matter.

You do not need a new stack. You need the draft out of the free picker before the weekend. If you already pay for another assistant, move the work there. If AI Plus is the only paid Google plan you use, assume Pro is leaving and do not park important client reasoning there.

Hype vs useful

The useful part is the date and the table. Unpaid personal accounts lose Flash and Pro on 9 October. Plus loses Pro on an emailed date. Pro and Ultra do not lose those three models on this page.

The noise is “Gemini is over” and any claim that Deep Think just landed on Pro. The help page we used does not say that. It also does not say image tools, Deep Research, or Live disappear. Model access is what changes. If you only use free Gemini for quick rewrites of your own notes, Flash-Lite is probably enough and you can ignore the upgrade pitch.
