What actually happened
On 29 September 2026 OpenAI shipped Dots inside ChatGPT. Each Dot is an always-on agent on GPT-6 Astra. It gets its own cloud computer and browser, can use plugins you already connected, and keeps working between sessions. You talk to it in ChatGPT, and later in Slack, Teams or text. The first Dot is included on Pro and Business Premium. Chat with it does not count against ChatGPT usage. Work it kicks into Codex or ChatGPT Work does. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare get an admin-off beta.
OpenAI says Dots will not change passwords, post or spend without explicit consent. You can inspect the cloud PC at any time. Specialist Dots with their own identity are an enterprise preview, with a Microsoft Agent 365 path later. Teams of Dots are a future claim, not a ship.
Why a small team cares
This is the first OpenAI agent that is supposed to keep moving after you close the lid. For a two-person shop that already pays Pro, that is a real test: park a status report or a support triage on the Dot and see if the draft is waiting in the morning.
The gate is the story. Plus is out. Personal Pro in Spain, the rest of the EEA, the UK and Switzerland is out for now. Business Premium is the path that works in those regions. If you are billing clients from Marbella on a personal Pro seat, this feature is not on your Monday list.
Hype vs useful
“Always-on employee” is vendor language. What shipped is a managed Astra agent with a VM, plugin access and an approval wall. Useful if you already pay and have one boring loop you can describe in a paragraph. Not useful as a reason to jump a plan, wire production credentials, or replace a human on client comms.
