What actually happened

OpenAI launched Dots at DevDay on 29 September 2026. Each Dot is an always-on agent on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser. You can message it in ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams. It keeps context across those channels. Plugins can reach a large app catalog. Background lookups are read-only: they cannot send messages, change app content, or control the browser while you are away. Custom Rules set allow, approve, or block. Password changes stay with you.

The first Dot is included, not a separate SKU. It comes with ChatGPT Pro at $100, $200, or $500 a month, and with a Business Premium seat at $100 a user a month billed annually, or $125 monthly. Plus, Go, Free, and Business Standard are not on the list. Business workspaces can mix seats, so only the person running the Dot needs Premium. Pro access excludes the UK, Switzerland, and the EEA at launch. Business Premium covers supported ChatGPT regions, which is the relevant path in Spain. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare are beta and off until an admin enables them.

Chat with the Dot does not count toward normal ChatGPT limits. Work it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work still counts as usual. For the first month, OpenAI said Dot usage would not count against eligible plan allowances. After that, terms are unpublished. Extra Dots are unpublished too. A spokesperson has described a future flat monthly fee for more Dots or more work per Dot.

Why a small team cares

At $100 it pays only if it finishes a block you already do every week.

A solo consultant in Málaga cannot get this on Plus, and cannot get it by upgrading Pro. The launch exclusion covers the EEA. The test is one Business Premium seat, two-user workspace minimum, pointed at a job with a visible before-and-after: unpaid invoices chased, or the Friday client report drafted from notes. OpenAI's own examples are internal, including a tester whose Dot prepared a forgotten invoice and sent it after approval. That is the shape that can cover $100. Open-ended research chat will not.

Disconnecting an app does not delete what the Dot already pulled. Deleting the Dot does. For client files, Business Premium is the cleaner default, because Business content is not used to train models by default. Personal Pro leaves that control in settings.

Hype vs useful

The hype is a coworker that runs the company. The useful slice is one person's follow-ups, with approval on anything that sends or spends. It does not answer customer calls, and specialist company Dots are enterprise pilots. GPT-6.1 Astra was shelved over scope and authorization. Dots run on the released GPT-6 Astra, not that model. The same failure mode is why the rules exist. Use the free first month to count finished jobs. If the count is zero, cancel before the unpublished usage terms land.
