What actually happened

Shopify added annotations to Analytics on 1 October 2026. On supported time-series report charts you can pin a note next to the spike. From the annotations panel you add a title, a description, a date or a date range, and a type. Shopify offers auto-detected categories, or you pick your own. You can edit, delete, and see who created each note, and search or filter notes from your team, installed apps, and Shopify.

Examples Shopify names: a campaign launch, a creator mention, a supplier change, a promotion, an operational change. Annotations are shared with anyone who has Reports permission, and they show up beside context that Shopify and apps already attach. That is the whole feature. No new metric. No AI summary.

Why a small team cares

A skincare brand on Shopify looks at September conversion in the first week of October. The line jumps on the 12th. The founder remembers a creator post. The ads person remembers a 15 percent code. The operator remembers a supplier delay that cut two SKUs. Previously the reason lived in Slack, a spreadsheet, or someone's head. Weeks later the report only shows the jump.

Now the note can sit on the chart, with an author and a date range. The next time someone asks why the month looked good, the answer is on the report instead of in a search through old threads. It only works if the note is written when the change happens. A blank panel in November does not reconstruct September.

Hype vs useful

Shopify's line is that reports show what changed and you know why, so capture the story in Analytics. Fair, and smaller than it sounds. Annotations do not attribute the spike, do not separate the creator from the code, and do not summarise the month. They are a shared notebook on the chart, visible to anyone with Reports permission, next to notes apps and Shopify may already attach.

Use them for the moments you would otherwise lose: the code went live on Tuesday, the creator posted on Thursday, the supplier slipped on Friday. If two of those land in the same week and nobody writes them down, the chart still looks like one clean win.
