What actually happened
On 29 September 2026 OpenAI reopened ChatGPT Pro 200 and added Pro 500 at $500 a month. Pro 500 is the only Pro plan with Astra Ultrafast in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI says that tier can generate up to 300 tokens a second in Codex, up to eight times standard speed.
The $200 plan does not get cheaper or faster. From 30 October it gets smaller. Included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex drops from 20 times the Plus allowance to 10 times. GPT-6 Pro messages in chat drop from 200 a week to 100. New Pro 200 sign-ups already sit on the lower allowance. Eligible existing subscribers keep the old 20x bucket through 29 October and receive a one-time grant of usage credits OpenAI values at $2,500, expiring 31 December 2026. OpenAI also said it will not bring back the old five-hour Pro 200 cap.
The help page no longer prints the 20x line as the live Pro 200 offer. It now says Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, and Pro 500 includes the most of the three.
Why a small team cares
A two-person shop that runs client drafts in Work and overnight Codex jobs on one $200 seat will hit the wall in the same week the invoice stays $200. The jobs did not get lighter. The included tank did.
Take a solo Shopify agency that parks product-page rewrites and theme patches in ChatGPT Work. Previously the $200 seat was the high-volume personal plan. After 30 October that seat is 10x Plus, the same usage-per-dollar as Pro 100 and Pro 500. Paying $500 buys 25x Plus and Ultrafast, not a bargain multiplier. Going from old Pro 200 to Pro 500 is about 1.25 times the Work and Codex allowance for 2.5 times the price.
If those jobs can run on GPT-6.1 Sol in Work, Codex, or the API, the $500 seat is optional. If they cannot, October 30 is when the $200 plan stops being the quiet default.
Hype vs useful
Ultrafast is real speed in Codex. It is not free fuel. It sits only on Pro 500, burns included usage first, then credits, and buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it at launch.
The useful move this week is a count, not a checkout. How many Work and Codex runs do you actually fire in a billed week. How many of those need GPT-6 Pro in chat. How many can live on Sol. The $2,500 credit is a bridge to 31 December, not a reason to keep overpaying after the cap drops.
