What actually happened
On 25 September 2026 Microsoft rebuilt the Copilot app around three surfaces: Home, Code and Autopilot. Home is Chat plus Cowork on one screen. Full Word, Excel and PowerPoint now run inside Copilot, with files that stay in sync with the Office apps. Code lets someone describe a tracker, dashboard or small automation in plain language. It is built on the same stack as GitHub Copilot and runs in a sandbox inside the tenant.
Autopilot is the part that changes the job. It was Scout. You give it a name, a role and a goal. It lives in your tenant with its own identity, memory and workspace, and it keeps going in the cloud after you close the window. Microsoft’s worked example is a supplier review: schedule, prep, meetings and follow-ups without another prompt. You can @mention it in Teams or Outlook like a colleague.
Home and Code start rolling out through the Frontier program in the coming weeks. Autopilot expands to private preview at the end of September. Office in Copilot is generally available now. The user subscription licence still covers Chat and Copilot in the Office apps. Cowork, Code and Autopilot run on usage-based billing in Copilot Credits.
Why a small team cares
A 12-person agency already on Microsoft 365 does not need a second agent platform for weekly status packs, document prep and channel follow-up. Previously you sat in chat and kept prompting. Now the same tenant can hold a standing worker that watches a Teams channel and comes back with a draft pack.
That only holds if the work already lives in Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Excel. It does not hold if the system of record is Shopify, a custom CRM or a WhatsApp inbox Copilot cannot see.
The bill moves with the model. Everyday chat stays on the per-user licence. Long-running agent work is metered. Leave Autopilot on a noisy channel with no cap and you will see the invoice before you see the output.
Hype vs useful
Microsoft is selling a new OS for work. What you can do this week is narrower. Most shops cannot switch Autopilot on for the company. Frontier and private preview come first. The useful part is the constraint: own identity, permissions, audit. Treat that as the product, not the slogan.
Useful this week: one bounded internal job, one owner, a spending policy, and a human who reads what the agent sent. Hype: replacing an account manager because the blog used the word teammate.
If I were running this account I would not point Autopilot at live client work or media buys. I would point it at the Friday status pack that already lives in Word and Excel, then compare the draft with last week’s human version.
