X is changing how it pays creators, and the new system sends a fairly clear message to anyone using AI to mass-produce social content.
Starting September 8, X is rolling out its new Original Content Rewards Program to creators who were previously enrolled in Revenue Sharing. The old program stopped accepting new members on August 7, with existing participants earning under it until September 7.
The replacement shifts the emphasis from generating engagement to publishing content X considers original and high quality.
According to X, qualifying content can include normal posts, Articles, videos and images, but it should reflect the creator’s own voice, expertise, ideas or creativity. Original reporting, analysis, commentary, self-created media and content that meaningfully contributes something new are the kinds of material the program is designed to reward.
That distinction matters because generative AI has made publishing enormous volumes of technically unique but practically interchangeable content extremely cheap.
A business can now turn one blog article into dozens of social posts, generate commentary on trending topics automatically, summarize other people’s work and schedule hundreds of posts with almost no human involvement.
X isn’t banning AI-generated content. But the economics are shifting away from rewarding content simply because it generates impressions.
For SMBs, consultants and solo entrepreneurs, that is probably a good thing.
Most small businesses cannot compete with content farms on volume. They can compete on expertise. A consultant explaining what actually happened during a client implementation, an ecommerce owner sharing conversion data from an experiment or an agency analysing a new Google Ads feature has something generic AI-generated content does not: first-hand information and a defensible point of view.
AI still has a useful role in that workflow. Use it to research, edit, create variations, turn long-form content into scripts or repurpose an original idea across formats. The mistake is allowing the AI-generated derivative to become the entire content strategy.
The same principle is increasingly relevant beyond X.
As AI makes content production effectively unlimited, platforms, search engines and audiences need better ways to decide what deserves attention. Original experience, proprietary data, expertise and strong opinions become more valuable precisely because generating another competent summary becomes almost free.
For businesses building audiences, the practical strategy is therefore not to stop using AI.
Use AI to increase the distribution of things only you could have created in the first place.
X’s new creator program is simply putting money behind that idea.
